David Beckham, Drake, Justin Bieber….the list of celebrities pairing socks with sandals this summer is almost endless. Never wear socks with sandals was once a hard and fast fashion rule, but this year we’ve thrown the rule book out the window!
The debate (and the stigma) around wearing socks and sandals have around for decades. This season the trend has had a definite fashion revival: everyone is doing it! It’s a look that’s perfect for wearing in a casual and sporty way. Ideal if you don’t want to sacrifice style for comfort. Here are our top tips for wearing socks with sandals and looking stylish at the same time:
Hot on the Runway
The return of this tricky trend started on the runway. Designers such as Calvin Klein, Marni, Maison Kitsuné and Kolor sent an abundance of different statement socks and sandals down the catwalk in their shows. From white banded sporty versions to bold block-colour ones, the only rule of thumb was that the socks you choose attracted attention.
Slides were the most popular sandals to pair with your chosen socks, whilst chunky leather gladiator sandals (sometimes lined with fur) are a great choice if you shy away from anything sporty. The key to pulling off this look with runway panache is to look effortless: wear the combo with your favourite shorts and head out like you don’t have a care in the world!
Although the trend entered the fashion industry via the runway, the origins of the trend are the locker room. Many professional and amateur athletes have been pairing their sports socks with their slides for years. It’s low-key, easy, and perfect for heading home after a workout, and something many savvy athletes choose to do to keep their sneakers clean.
Because of its sports origins, this isn’t a look to wear with your favourite suit or tailored chinos. Instead, the combo should be worn with shorts and sweats for a low key look. The overall feel is decidedly urban street, and you’ll find yourself in good company with street style bloggers, basketball stars and rappers alike.
Alternatively, if you want to introduce a ‘geek chic’, high-fashion feel, pair you socks and slides with a pair of skinny jeans, a fitted tee and a tailored cardigan in a vibrant shade. Don’t forget to roll your jeans, or choose a pair in an ankle-grazing length, to really show off your socks. Add sunglasses and a satchel for the ultimate fashion feel.
Choose the Right Socks
The kind of socks you choose is important to getting this look right. Whilst we’re big fans of bold, patterned versions (and think they’re a great way to inject personality into any outfit) they should never be on display paired with sandals. Instead, embrace the sports luxe origins of this trend by looking for sports socks in bright white, black, or bold sport-inspired colours (such as burgundy or royal blue).
If you feel that your outfit needs a little pattern to add interest then try either sporty logos or wide stripes in shades of black, red, or blue. Coordinate these stripes with the rest of your outfit to inject a little fashion edge into what is, fundamentally, an anti-fashion trend.
